Music Option 1 and 2

Many students in year 2 have been enquiring about the Music Option 1 Year 3 class. Here is some information which should be of some use.

Music Option 1 and 2

Students in Year 3 of the B Ed course have the option to take a class which offers the opportunity to explore music and learning in a variety of contexts. The class builds on the work covered in years 1 and 2, giving students the opportunity to play and sing in a range of different styles and genres. While prior musical experience is useful, it is not essential. Many students take the class because they feel that they would like to develop more awareness of approaches to learning in music and help and support will be provided for those students who may not have had much formal musical tuition in the past. As time is fairly limited, no specific musical skills tuition is given although opportunities to learn to play new instruments and to learn from more experienced peers are encouraged.

Outline
A wide variety of music resources are studied with the emphasis on thematic materials, involving the students in group work. Students will also have regular opportunities to participate in music making themselves through playing and singing published as well as original materials devised by students as part of the class. The emphasis is on the experience of sharing in an ensemble and the principles of arranging materials for group music making.

Over the course of the term, and in preparation for Music 2, students will: examine and explore a wide range of resources including web based materials and published sources, devise and implement a programme of music making with their peers, explore the range of possible music making activities within the ‘Music Express’, ‘Voiceworks’, ‘5-14 On-line’, Singbook’ and other materials, while examining the possibilities for working in the area of Additional Support Needs.

The final part of the module (Music 2) will require students to work individually and in groups to prepare and produce arrangements and other materials. These will be used in the assignment, which is a submission of a short package of materials for use in the classroom. This is achieved through a blend of tutorials, practical activities and guided study.

Assessment

Assessment in Year Three is by successful completion of course work tasks in the form of a short presentation and by the assessment of a completed diary.

At the end of the term students will give a short presentation to the rest of the class which gives a summary of what has been learned, describes the proposed teaching materials package and which fully describes potential links with other curricular areas. The presentation should be no longer than 10 minutes and may be followed by questions and discussion.

Year 4
A school related assignment, including a written report and examples on tape, CD or other media equivalent to 3,000 words.
